DIRLETON CASTLE

Dirleton Castle, Historic Castles East Lothian, Scotland. Dirleton Castle can actual be dated back to the first owners who were the de Vaux family. Anglo-Normans who came to Scotland in the reign of David I (1124-53).

Throughout the Wars of Independence with England, the castle suffered greatly during the latter stages of its English occupancy.

Dirleton Castle East Lothian

Eventually the Scots recapture Dirleton Castle in East Lothian, only for Robert the Bruce to order its partial demolition.

The Haliburton family repaired the castle during the 14th century and it was then acquired by the Ruthvens in 1505. The Ruthvens were involved in several plots against Mary, Queen of Scots, and King James VI, and eventually forfeited the castle in 1600.

Dirleton then ceased to be a residence. The damaged castle was then acquired by John Nisbet, Lord Dirleton, who decided to build a new country house on the nearby Archerfield Estate.

Victory at the Battle of Dunbar

Victory at the Battle of Dunbar (1650) gave Cromwell, where his troops attacked the castle, gave him control of Southern Scotland. The castle then fell into disuse and in 1663. On a visit, you will be able to see the prison, chapel and storage vaults. Very close to the castle is the unique dovecote.

A fine example of a pigeon house from around the 1500’s, with more than 1,000 nesting boxes. The site of the castle and beautiful gardens are maintained by Historic Scotland.
