The change in Scottish counties and councils
The change in Scottish counties and councils and the structure of local government in Scotland has a rich and intricate history. It has been shaped by significant reorganisations over the last century.
As of April 1, 1996, Scotland is now divided into 32 council areas., each managed by a unitary council. If you’re interested in the various council areas, including their population statistics and geographic details, you can find this information on our dedicated page. Additionally, there’s a map showcasing these council areas since 1996, along with links to specific pages for each area.
In 1890, significant changes took place as the traditional Scottish counties were reorganised into 33 county councils. This restructuring aimed to tidy up territorial divisions, eliminating many of the enclaves and exclaves that had complicated the previous map.
