ISLE OF SKYE
Scotland has many islands, but the Isle of Skye has been a magnet for visitors with its hospitality and outstanding scenery.
The largest and northernmost of the main islands in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides is the Isle of Skye. From a hilly centre dominated by the Cuillin Mountains, the island’s peninsulas spread outward. On the Isle of Skye, some of the nation’s most striking alpine vistas can be found on the stony slopes.
The Old Man of Storr’s rock pillar is located further south, while the Quiraing is a breathtaking range of rock pinnacles on the eastern side of the peninsula’s main spine. Additionally, Skye has served as the setting for a number of blockbuster feature films.
Nestled on the breathtaking east side of Skye, Portree is the vibrant capital of the island, perfectly perched overlooking a tranquil bay! Though it may be just about 200 years young, Portree began its journey as a charming fishing village in the early 19th century, thanks to the visionary Lord MacDonald.
This delightful village has it all for visitors craving a mix of adventure and relaxation – from banks and churches to cosy cafes and fantastic restaurants. Don’t miss the Aros Centre for a movie, the school’s swimming pool and library, as well as inviting gift and book shops.
In Portree, you’ll find all the essentials like a tourist information centre, petrol stations, and supermarkets—one right in the village and a larger option down the Dunvegan Road.
Adding to its charm, Portree is alive with excitement throughout the year, hosting amazing annual events like the beloved Portree Show, the exhilarating Isle of Skye half marathon, and the grand Skye Highland Games, which is the island’s biggest event, attracting both locals and visitors alike.
